Building a Nonprofit from One Backyard

Staten’s Stems began when Kate was just thirteen. She noticed something missing—most of the girls she met didn’t feel excited about science or welcome in STEM spaces. So she decided to do something about it. What started as a small garden in her Middleburg, Florida, backyard is now a nonprofit working to bring hands-on science to more children in Clay County.

Kate believes children learn best when they can do the work themselves. That’s why Staten’s Stems uses food-growing projects to teach STEM skills. Through soil, seeds, and tools, children learn how science works by watching things grow.

Why the Mission Matters

In local classrooms, fewer girls are choosing science and tech. Kate saw that and made it her mission to welcome more young minds into STEM—especially those who are often overlooked. She will be teaching how to break science down into something real and useful.

With support from the community, Staten’s Stems is growing in reach. More families in northeast Florida will now have access to these hands-on learning experiences.
